Downtown Cairo to Become Open Museum

Atef Abd El-Hamid, governor, Cairo, Egypt, announced that the downtown area of Cairo is set to be transformed into an open museum.

A dedicated project plan includes the redevelopment of the stock exchange vicinity. The plan aims to reconstruct buildings and facades in order to restore the 18th and 19th century Khedive era architectural style of downtown Cairo.

This will be incorporated into wider plans turning 23 buildings and 12,000 m2 of surrounding pedestrian streets into an open museum.

According to reports in the local press, 17 of the building are currently under development through funding provided by National Bank of Egypt.

The same reports said the owners of shops closed down while the work is being carried out and will be able to reopen them after obtaining relevant licenses.
